The author Bernard Cooper proposes that shorter stories require "… an alertness to detail, a quickening of the senses, a focusing of the literary lens, so to speak, until one has magnified some small aspect of what it means to be human."
DimeStories are compelling narratives - some fictional, some factual - that measure just three-minutes long. They may be funny, tragic, or strange. We are open to being surprised, so rather than detail what they are, here is a list of what DimeStories are not: essays, commentary, poems, news articles, rants, or sermons. DimeStories do not exceed 600 words.
If you ever find yourself in the fine pueblo of San Diego, stop by The Grove bookstore on the first Friday of any month and be part of our DimeStories OPEN-MIC, where writers gather and drop their names in the bucket to read 3-minute pieces they've been working on. Also check out our showcase DimeStories LIVE reading series, with dates in San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, and more.
“Fine, fine, yeah, yeah… How do I submit?”
There are 3 ways to become a DimeStories-teller.

Sponsored by San Diego Writers, Ink
Here is the submission process: just show up, and put your name in the bucket. You’re in! There is no other submission requirement. All stories are posted on the DimeStories website so that you can amaze and delight your mother.

DimeStories LIVE Showcase: If you want to submit a story for reading on-stage at one of our showcase DimeStories LIVE events…
If you are exclusively interested in reading before an audience as part of our DimeStories LIVE series, please click here to send the text of your three-minute story (less than 625 words, please) pasted into the body of an e-mail. Please include your name, city, phone number, story title, and a perfectly-crafted tale.
DimeStories LIVE events feature a maximum of 24 stories. Each of the 24 DimeStories LIVE readers are paid handsomely with applause – but not so much with money. And by “not so much,” I mean “not at all.”
All stories will be posted on the showcase web page. Some stories that are selected to be read at DimeStories LIVE events may be optioned for inclusion on the radio.
Check our calendar for upcoming events. If you’re nowhere near LA, NYC, or San Diego, you can still submit. We’re planning additional shows in San Francisco and Chicago, and maybe even one near you…

DimeStories RADIO: If you want to submit to read your work in-studio for DimeStories radio…
Below you will find a link to our SUBMISSION AGREEMENT page. If your work is selected to appear on public radio, you will be paid $200 – TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS - AMERICAN! Do you have any idea how much coffee you could buy with that kind of dough? A lot!
Aside from the filthy lucre, we will seriously pimp your work and current projects on the radio. We will say really, really nice things about you, even if it means that we have to make stuff up. Do you want us to tell the world that you parachuted into Kandahar to save children? Because we will. Just send us a really good story.
Logistically, the radio part of DimeStories is an easy gig. Selected writers will travel to their nearest public radio station or studio to be directed remotely by DimeStories producers.
The SUBMISSION AGREEMENT will lead you to the page where you’ll be asked to enter your contact info, the title and text of your story. Ready? CLICK HERE.
